A Quiet Natural Retreat in the Heart of the City

Living in a bustling and noisy city like Istanbul, one sometimes seeks a place to breathe. Some find it by walking along the Bosphorus, others by getting lost in historic streets. But there is also a hidden oasis known to very few, where nature and peace coexist: Atatürk Arboretum.

You may have only heard its name on signs. Perhaps you have passed by it countless times but never stepped inside. This article is here to take you there. Think of it as a guide tailored for both botany enthusiasts and those looking to escape the city.

 What is Atatürk Arboretum?

The word “arboretum” comes from the Latin word “arbor,” meaning “tree,” and simply refers to a tree park. However, the Atatürk Arboretum is much more than that. It is a scientific laboratory, a nature school, and also a meditation area.

Established in 1949 and taking its current form in 1982, this area is managed by the Forestry Faculty of Istanbul University for scientific purposes but also serves as a public living plant museum.

 Where is it located?

Atatürk Arboretum is located in the Bahçeköy neighborhood of Istanbul’s Sarıyer district. It is right next to Belgrade Forest, appearing as an extension of the forest, but it actually has a very different structure. This is because it was planned not by chance but by the meticulous mind of humans.

  •  If you are coming by car, you can follow the signs for Bahçeköy on the TEM highway.
  •  If you prefer public transportation, you can easily reach the arboretum via bus routes such as 42T and 42M.

What Plants Are There? Special for Botanical Enthusiasts

The arboretum is home to over 2,000 plant species. And most of these are not only unique to Turkey; they are special species brought from all corners of the world. This makes it not just a park but an open-air laboratory where you can experience the climates of different parts of the world right in Istanbul.

 Tree Species

  • Sequoia (Sequoia sempervirens): This tree with its massive trunk was brought from the forests of California.
  • Eastern Spruce (Picea orientalis): Native to Turkey’s Black Sea region, this species thrives in cool, shaded areas.
  • Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum): This species is the most photographed due to its leaves turning red in autumn.

 Flowering Plants

  • Magnolia grandiflora: Stunning with its large white flowers.
  • Ornamental cherry (Prunus serrulata): When it blooms in spring, it resembles a Japanese garden.

 What Does It Offer Visitors?

 Peace and Quiet

As you walk here, you completely forget the noise of the city. Phones remain silent, and people speak in whispers. Because this is not just a place for the eyes, but also a sanctuary for the soul.

A Photographer’s Paradise

The arboretum is a photographer’s dream. Especially in autumn and spring, the reflective ponds, golden leaves, and misty mornings offer unique photo opportunities.

Note: Prior permission is required for tripods and professional photography, as this area is also protected as a scientific site.

 Education and Science

It is an important study area for botanical students, landscape architects, and natural scientists. Each plant is labeled with its species name, native region, and classification, allowing visitors to learn as they explore.

 Notes and Observations from Inside

I first went there on a friend’s recommendation. My expectations were low, but as soon as I stepped inside, I felt like I had entered a different climate. Sitting by the pond and simply listening to the sounds of the birds was like a form of therapy ( ). As I walked further, I was surprised to see the countries listed on the labels of some tree species. China, Japan, Canada… These trees were brought here from the other side of the world and are now thriving in this land.

Sometimes you see a student reading a book in a corner, sometimes an artist looking at the water. No one bothers anyone else. It feels like everyone has their own dialogue with nature.
